Espoma Organic Lawn Food - Fall Winterizer (8-0-6)

If you want to go organic with your lawn care products, Espoma’s line is excellent. I use their starter fertilizer in all of my perennial beds every time I plant a shrub, orgnamental grass, or flowering plant.

Made of feather meal, poultry manure, and sulfate of potash, this organic lawn food will provide your lawn with the extra potassium it needs for plant health and rapid greening next spring.

Rest easy knowing that it’s kid and pet safe (although your dogs may think it’s a snack).

Jonathan Green Winter Survival Fall Lawn Food (10-0-20)

If you’re looking for a highly effective fall lawn fertilizer from one of the most trusted brands in lawn care, you’ve found it.

I adore all of Jonathan Green’s lawn care products, and can highly recommend their winter survival lawn food. It helps to keep your lawn greener later into the year, and your turfgrass will be able to store up nutrients for a burst of green growth early in the spring.

My top choice for established lawns. Sure to get the neighbors talking!

Greenview Fall Lawn Fertilizer - Fairway Formula (30-0-12)

If you have a younger lawn (installed within the last 5 years) or recently completed a lawn renovation with core aeration and overseeding, go with Greenview’s fairway formula.

You’ll notice that the Nitrogen (the first number) is higher in this fertilizer than some of the others. There’s a good reason for that.

About 60% of the nitrogen in this formula is slow-release, meaning that you’ll see a nice green-up in the fall (without a lot of extra mowing required), and this fertilizer will continue to nourish your turf through the winter and into spring, which is especially valuable for lawns still establishing themselves.

Ferti-Lome Winterizer and Weed Preventer II (10-0-14)

If you struggle every year with annual weeds like crabgrass, then this product may be your new best friend – just don’t plan to overseed after using it.

This 10-0-14 fertilizer will not only support your turf through the fall and set you up for great spring growth, but it contains Dithiopyr, a selective pre-emergent to block late fall and early spring germination of annual weeds (works for 4 months).

Apply this in the fall, followed by an early spring pre-emergent to effectively block your troublesome annual weeds for 8 months.

Why Macro-Nutrient Ratios Matter

Explaining N-P-K Macro-Nutrients

All fertilizers are not created equal, and using the right blend of nutrients at the right time of year will produce the best results for your lawn.

Each of the macro-nutrients you see listed on a fertilizers label supports a different part of your grass. Fall fertilizer that’s high in nitrogen and potassium supports your lawn, providing it the nutrients it needs to resist disease and stand up to winter’s dormancy.

Prepare your lawn to thrive next spring by feeding it properly in autumn, before it goes dormant for the winter.
